Résumé/abstract:
To approach the issue of the relationship between lexical tone and intonation, a functional perspective is adopted. A review of the wealth of available evidence brings out two dimensions of typological diversity: (i) concerning lexical tone systems, the analysis of contour tones into sequences of level tones, which has clearly demonstrated its validity for numerous languages, does not clearly apply to all; (ii) concerning intonation systems, languages differ in whether – and to what extent – they make intonational use of tone, i.e. have tones of intonational origin that are structurally similar to lexical tones. Intonational use of tones appears to be relatively rare. On the basis of this review, a hypothesis is set out concerning the relationship between the nature of the lexical tone system of a language and that of its intonation system. The hypothesis is that the encoding of intonational phenomena in terms of tones tends to appear in languages that have a lexical system of level tones – by a process of tonal reinterpretation of intonation. Languages that have phonetically complex tones (non-decomposable contour tones, some of which may comprise phonation-type register specifications, such as breathy or glottalized phonation) tend not to make intonational use of tone.
