Résumé/Abstract:
In this talk I will present the intonational form and function in one-word utterances in Northern Vietnamese conversations, a study in which the methods in Conversation Analysis and Laboratory Phonology are combined. The pragmatic functions investigated are backchannels (hearer signals, BCs) and repair initiations (signals indicating problems hearing or understanding utterances, RIs). In general, BCs were found to have a low falling intonation (regardless of the lexical tones), whereas RIs were found to have a final rise. An analysis of tone-intonation interaction within Autosegmental Phonology is provided. Since this interaction in RIs appears to have a degree of variation, further evidence was sought from multi-word utterances and read speech using role playing. Results suggest that the melody at the edges of utterances in Northern Vietnamese can be analysed as a combination of the lexical tone of the final syllable/word and an intonational tone used to express communicative functions. The analysis is supported by a perception experiment testing how listeners interpret the intonation contours produced in BCs. The study also has implications for cross-cultural misunderstandings and foreign language acquisition.
