Since the 80's a relative consensus has been achieved in generative phonology about a universal prosodic hierarchy including a number of well-established levels of phrasing (prosodic word, phonological phrase, intonational phrase) indirectly mapped to syntactic constituents. However, the study of intonation has also adopted other types of phrases (accentual phrase, intermediate phrase) that were more or less compatible with this typology, and the universality of the hierarchy has recently been questioned. Models arguing for a more direct mapping of syntax and prosody are also making a comeback. This presentation will address these theoretical issues and will (hopefully) be followed by an exchange on the existing evidence for prosodic domains in Vietnamese.
